Best Ways to Beat the Summer Heat in Savannah
When the temperatures start soaring, locals and tourists alike scatter to the closest AC or shady spot in Savannah. Luckily, there are plenty of fun activities to do that will help you beat the summer heat!
1. Day at the Beach
The cool water becomes our best friend during the summer months. Downtown Savannah is just a short drive away from the waves of Tybee, but one of our favorite spots is Hilton Head Island. A quick drive over to South Carolina, and you’ll be greeted by beautiful sand, waves, and plenty of space spend the afternoon at the beach. (Don’t forget the sunscreen!)
2. Shop ‘Til You Drop
For the shopaholics who think the best way to beat the heat is roaming from store to store, Savannah is home to a variety of boutiques and name-brand stores. Although Broughton Street might have the most popular row of stores to choose from, sprinkled throughout Downtown are other smaller gems that are worth hunting down. You might find a bargain or a piece that you just can’t live without!
3. Go on a House Tour
Savannah is rich with history, and a great way to stay out of the heat is to explore old homes scattered around the city. If you’re a history buff, this is definitely an activity for you. There are so many homes in Savannah that have been transformed into museums, filled with period pieces and interesting tales. Some museum homes include the Harper Fowlkes House, Davenport House Museum, and Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House.
4. Cool off with a Cold Treat
There’s nothing quite as satisfying on a hot summer day as cold ice cream. Leopold’s Ice Cream on Broughton Street is a Savannah staple! Load a waffle cone with Tutti Frutti, one of their original flavors (a rum ice cream with candied fruit and roasted Georgia pecans) or indulge in one of their other delicious flavors.
5. View the Art Scene
Spend the day gazing at marvelous art in the numerous galleries and museums that call Savannah home. There’s the Telfair Museum’s Academy as well as their Jepson Center, for a collection of both modern and period art. If you’re a little farther from Downtown in the Starland District of Savannah, you’ll find many local art galleries, waiting for you to explore!
6. Cruise the Savannah River
You could explore Savannah by river on a Savannah Riverboat Cruise. These colorful boats are always docked along River Street, waiting for passengers to climb aboard, enjoy a yummy meal and live entertainment, and watch the sights of Savannah gently cruise by.
7. Stroll River Street
As the temperature cools and the day comes to an end, it’s the perfect time for a leisurely walk…over to River Street Sweets. For a more decadent ending to the day, head inside another Savannah staple and fill a bag with sweet treats.
8. Find Some Shade
Tourists quickly become thankful for the shadow moss that hangs from all the live oak trees in Savannah’s squares and Forsyth Park. Pack a picnic or grab your favorite book, find a cool and shady spot, then relax.
