Breweries to See When You Visit Savannah
When you think of breweries, your mind may first wander to Portland, Austin, Chicago, or Memphis. While these cities are all well known for their breweries, there is one city on the list you may not expect – Savannah! Savannah’s brewery industry has been steadily growing over the past few years, producing several uniquely southern breweries for visitors to enjoy. We’ve put together a list of the best breweries you can find in the middle of your exploration of Savannah’s Historic District.
Southbound Brewing Company
Southbound is a craft beer lover’s dream. They offer a large variety of locally crafted beer in a very cool, laid back setting. The low lighting and wooden undertones add to the overall atmosphere of the brewery. Here, you can fill up your growler, or bring some friends to hang out while sipping on some of Savannah’s best brews. The mastermind behind Southbound Brewing Co. specializes in American and some European craft beers, and you’re in for a real treat if you stop in for a tasting.
Southbound offers brewery tours every Wednesday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. You don’t need a reservation, just swing on by. They’re located right downtown and run guided tours every half hour.
Service Brewing Co.
What started out as a home brewing project in 2011 soon turned into the now popular Service Brewing Company in Savannah. Kevin Ryan was given a “do it yourself” brewing kit that persuaded him to open a brewery inspired by service to country and community. That passion for his community has made Service Brewing Company a hit with Savannah’s locals, and is gaining steadily with the tourism audience as well. The brewers love to experiment with local and regional ingredients, which makes for a uniquely southern flavor! Located right downtown on Indian Street, it is a short drive for anyone wanting to check out the Savannah brewery’s popular tours. Tours are on every Thursday and Friday from 5:30 – 7:30 and on Saturdays from 2:00 – 4:00.
Savannah Homebrew Shoppe
Have you ever thought about building your own beer kit? Savannah Homebrew Shoppe is the place to do it. They have ten beer styles to choose from. They also offer great discounts on starter kits as well as kegging systems when you bring your friends. Savannah Homebrew Shoppe makes an effort to support local brewers. In addition to their kits and equipment, they offer supplies needed to make wine AND cheese. What more could one ask for from a brewery? They are open Tuesday – Friday from 3 – 6 and on Saturday from 12 – 5 but are flexible if you would like to visit at an earlier time.
Southern Barrel Brewing Co.
Ready for a little road trip? Southern Barrel Brewing Company, located in Bluffton, SC, is certainly worth the 30 minute drive from Savannah. Southern Barrel isn’t just a brewery, it’s also a beer garden and tavern. They may be new, but the team at Southern Barrel certainly knows what they’re doing. The menu items in their restaurant contain local ingredients that change with the seasons. They offer seasonal and year-round staple beers, so there is sure to be something for everyone. To top it off, the tavern was made using wood from Pennsylvania that was originally used for the owner’s barn. Not only will you experience great beer at Southern Barrel, you will also be witness to one of the most beautiful taverns around. They are open every day of the week; check out their website for more specific hours.
River Dog Brewing Company
Up for another road trip? River Dog Brewing Company is also 30 minutes outside Savannah in Ridgeland, SC. They feature ales made from scratch in the Lowcountry.
