Experience Savannah in June

Summer means soaring temperatures and cool nights, yummy barbeque and drinks with friends, sitting poolside or relaxing on the beach. These are all the typical things to do during the summer, but what about strolling through a farmer’s market or watching fireworks explode into the night? How about eating oysters or sipping bourbon? Of course you could take in Savannah the traditional way with trolleys and ghost tours, but here are some unique events that we recommend our guests experience this June!

Spend the Morning at the Forsyth Farmer’s Market

Each Saturday morning, from 9am-1pm, Forsyth Park is swamped with vendors and shoppers participating in the Farmer’s Market. The market is located on the south end of the park at the intersection of Bull Street and Park Avenue. The event was created almost 10 years ago with the intention of promoting sustainable products and a direct relationship between artisan and buyer. Today, the market hosts close to 30 vendors, selling freshly baked breads and mouth-watering chocolate, farm-to-table vegetables and local honey…and just about everything in between.

Embrace All the First Friday Events

Savannahians love Fridays. We have First Friday Fireworks, First Friday Oyster Roasts, and even a First Friday Art March. The fireworks celebrate the end of an old month and ring in the beginning of a new month. Watch the sky light up in an array of colors and designs over the Savannah River. The weekly oyster roasts are sponsored by The Westin Savannah Harbor, so take a ferry from River Street over to the oyster headquarters and indulge in delicious Low country favorites, specialty cocktails, and live music. Lastly, the Art Walk features a collection of galleries, restaurants, and local boutiques with free trolley transportation to each spot on the tour. There’s even an Indie Arts Market and a Kids Art Activity station, so the event is great for the whole family!

Go to a Festival or Two

The Savannah Waterfront Association hosts a variety of events throughout the year, but during the summer, there are a few you should attend. The Blues, Jazz, and BBQ is an annual event that features (as the name reveals) blues, jazz, and smoky barbeque. This year the event takes place during the last weekend of June. All food will be from local restaurants and catering companies, so bring the family and support local businesses! Happening the same weekend this year, the Bourbon & Boots event will have bourbon tastings, live music, and (of course) yummy food!

Have a Beach Day

Savannah sits in a prime location for beach-going. Whether you prefer sitting in the sand, soaking up the rays, or just lounging with the salty waves, we have the perfect beaches for you. Just a short drive from Downtown Savannah is Tybee Island. This small coastal community is a favorite for locals and vacationers. Another one of our favorite spots is Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Only an hour away, this beach is well worth the trip. Once you reach the island, you’ll be greeted by a quaint shopping center filled with everything from boutique stores to delicious food. Oh, and don’t forget the 12 miles of beach. For years, Hilton Head Island has been called one of the top 10 family beaches in the country. Grab your bathing suit and sunscreen; it’s time to go to the beach!
