Savannah Cemetery Tours

“To understand the living, you got to commune with the dead.”

In “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” root doctor Minerva packs lots of meaning into one simple phrase, one that aptly fits the feel of that movie as well as certain parts of the city it so brightly featured. The portrayal of Savannah in that film has led many people to embark on Savannah cemetery tours to satisfy a craving for mystery and thrill.
Bonaventure Cemetery is one of Savannah’s oldest and largest historic cemeteries, and is considered by many to be the single most haunted cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. It became famous in the mid-1990’s when it was featured in the novel and following movie, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” People come from around the world to experience the unique grounds that are breathtaking by day, ominous by night. The beautiful tree-lined pathways invite tourists and locals alike to meander through the grounds filled with examples of Savannah’s unique cemetery sculpture and architecture.

Another historic cemetery in Savannah is Colonial Park Cemetery, located in the heart of Savannah’s historic district. Established in 1750, it contains more than nine thousand graves, and is the oldest intact municipal cemetery in Savannah. Most of Savannah’s burial grounds established before 1750 have all been built over, giving Savannah the unique title of the “city that lives upon her dead,” and Colonial Park Cemetery is no exception. More than ten thousand people were buried in the southwest corner of Wright Square, and yet there are fewer than one thousand grave markers. Eerie areas of the cemetery like this one attract tales of the lives, and afterlives, of those who are buried beneath visitors’ feet.

The popularity of these historic Savannah cemeteries have led to the creation of many tours of the grounds, where experienced guides inform visitors of the history and the hauntings in our city. Whatever your plans are for visiting Savannah, embarking on one of Savannah’s cemetery tours is a must-do while you’re here!
